Earth Day Marketing is a Chance for Companies to Show Vision

“There is a great need for the introduction of new values in our society, where bigger is not necessarily better, where slower can be faster, and where less can be more.” — Gaylord Nelson, U.S. Senator, Governor & Founder of Earth Day

Earth Day is April 22, a day to diversify, educate and activate the environmental movement worldwide. Since its establishment in 1970, it has come to be celebrated in 192 countries worldwide, and, of course, marketers all over the world now tie campaigns to Earth Day with varying levels of success. So, how is Earth Day celebrated? What were some of the best campaign in recent years, and how will marketers participate in 2019?

How Earth Day is Celebrated?

Although the way in which organizations have celebrated Earth Day has changed multiple times, the general idea is to address issues that adversely affect the environment. This could be accomplished by carpooling to reduce carbon emissions and clearing a public beach of garbage to name a couple of examples. However, this brief description by Earth Day Network explains that even these ideas are being broadened and are including issues that affect our health and communities.[1]

Now companies and organizations participate, for example, by “greening deteriorated schools, creating green jobs, and promoting activism to stop pollution.”[2] As long as these objectives are being met, there is no one right way to celebrate Earth Day. For more ideas, this article by AnyPromo.com provides a list of 10 ways to create the perfect Earth Day campaign.[3]

Best of Past Earth Day Campaigns

There have been many great Earth Day marketing campaigns. This article by minttwist provides their favorites from the past. One that is especially interesting was by NASA as they provided high-resolution global satellite images for public download.[4] These images showed works of nature such as the “spread of wildfires, movements of icebergs, and growth of tropical storms from up close.”[5]

Earth Day 2019 & Visions of the 50th Anniversary

Celebrating Earth Day provides a worthwhile opportunity to create a marketing campaign for your company. Creating a successful campaign can be simple as demonstrated so long as issues that affect the environment and your community are connected and addressed. While it’s too late for this year, next year would be as good a time as ever to join. The vision for 2020 is to make the 50th anniversary the “catalyst that galvanizes an unparalleled global collaboration.”[6]  Earth Day 2020 will be your company’s chance to jump in and show how bigger is not necessarily better, where slower can be faster, and where less can be so much more.
